Tour Of Flanders Weekeny Cycling package

After last years experience of the Tour of Flanders cycle package i came better prepared..25mm Continental Grand Prix 4 tyres ( bomb proof!!!) extra handlebar tape to absorb the shock on the wrists plus electrical tape around the bottle cages so the drink bottles don’t eject at the first cobbles!!! Here’s my little resume of the weekend. Gian & Richard already participated last year and Mick & Jez were new to the event Day 1 – charged down the M1 in Mick’s La Squadra van….along the M20 we bumped into Richard/Jez who happened to notice Gian’s shiny head glistening as we drove past….rendezvous at Dover Docks..quick introduction and then boarded the ferry for Calais….once on board we went straight to the restaurant and enjoyed an excellent lunch with a few bottles of wine just to loosen up…at Calais a 2 hr 30m drive to Ghent (very beautiful city….with large piazza’s restaurants/bars amazing architecture and canals (reminded me of Brugge actually). At Oudenaarde we collected our registration details simple and stress free and headed back to Ghent to our hotel, change & dinner with long discussions over spare ribs and beer about tactics the next day.. Day 2….. 18,000 participants were registered!!! With that number it was surprising how well organised the start was….plenty of marshals and the opportunity to get last minute provisions plus a visit to the bike mechanic for Mick who hadn’t seen/ridden his bike all year (the gears was full of winter salt)… we started @9.00 we had 140km route, 1,559 m of climbing and 14km cobbles most deeply rutted and crowned in the middle!! we were able to keep together very easily for the whole route….the first climb the infamous Koppenburg came up after only 15km and immediately we had to walk up the climb which was a big surprise ( i then realised they had changed the route from last year) this was the only problem of the day after this climb everyone was well strung out along narrow country lanes, the many short climbs were at times real brutal and the longest stretch of cobbles was 2.3km…..i hit the cobbles really hard (or as Nick Cotton would say full GAS!!)this time i had a little more control then last year however you still cant imagine the first shock of the vibration travelling through your wrist to arms to shoulders all the way down to your butt cheeks!!, the hands gripped the handle bars as never before to control your direction but you had to pedal hard to keep in control and to move forward…..cornering added even more of a test of balance and control, the feeling at the end of each section was palpable on all our faces as we gave our body’s a chance to relax before the next cobbled section. No major incidents to report except one little scare when i heard a loud crack around my seat saddle thinking Shit i’ve broken the saddle…the result wasn’t so bad…the seat pitch had angled 15% not totally uncomfortable but it did worry me and so I made sure i didn’t sit on my saddle on the cobbled descents in case it was going to get worse… ..the last 2 climbs are the legendary Kwaremont and Paterburg both steep cobbled climbs the last being 20%. You really had to put all your weight as far forward as possible otherwise you were easily going to fall over, equally importantly at the same time was to pick your way through what little space there was on the narrow climb and keep focused on your line while you weaved in and out of the people who were walking or falling off!! These last 2 climbs were 1km apart ..all of which came towards the end…then a 15km sprint for the finish to Oudenaarde …we crossed the line after 140km….absolutely exulted…i was so pleased my extra attention in getting the bike ready paid off.. I was much more confident on the cobbles and it made a massive difference to last years experience. Other good news no one punctured or had any major mechanical problems. After.. we hit the famous Oudenaarde cycle bar inside the cycle museum run by the famous Flandrian Legend Freddy Maertens..he was there again…the place was buzzing with Brits and Belgiums all congratulating each other on a great ride….evening we treated ourselves to a major dinner in a really cool restaurant and toasted each other to a job well done.. Day 3 We cycled to Kwaremont, I had booked a restaurant location for our little group which was located at the top of the climb with our own TV screen so that we were we were able to watch the race unfold and as the race passed by Kwaremont 3 times we were able to head out each time to watch by the side of the cobbled road and watch all the riders pass real excitement and shouts of encouragement plus cow bells from a mix bag of Brits and Belgiums. Local Pro Russ Downing was participating in this event for the very first time. After the last time the pro’s came past we sat down to hot chocolate and watched the final 15km on TV then headed to the finish at Oudenaarde were we mixed in with all the teams buses and riders and watched nearby Sagan and Cancellara being interviewed on stage…bumped into Russ who had finished 60th a great result in his first Tour of Flanders!! after that we hit the famous cycle bar again for beer and chips and a natter with the locals. Ive participated in Etape, Gran Fondo’s, Maratona dels Dolomites and L’eroica but this event is quite unique, low key, stress free and great fun a full 48 hours of participating and watching one of the oldest classics in the cycling calendar…. roll on next year!!…

We “Nonna’s La Squadra” came back to participate in the Michele Bartoli team time trial to try and improve on last years time and learn from experience. Well we did just that. a much stonger team this time and an agreement by all not to hang back for those who couldn’t keep the pace. The evening before the usual one drink before bed was extended to 2 and then 3 but we did get to bed earlier then last year. In the morning Mirko (pro Masseur) popped in to give everyone a professional massage which gave everyone the focus for the morning ahead!!…NONNA’S la Squadra started off amazingly strong at well over 50kph in the first 10km!! the weather was cloudy with strong winds coming from the sea plus occassional rain. Massimo my colleague and I gave the guys lots of encouragement via the car horns and general shouts of support..the boys had a much slicker line throughout which made a huge difference to last year and constant regular changes at the front allowed the boys to recuperate however the very strong start began to show as the pace whilst still high began to take its toll and as the pace settled down to 43kph which was the average speed the team began to shed 1,2 and the last 10km a 3rd rider retired….with 5km a 4th rider Matt fell back and I thought that was it….the team was down to 4!!! but after 1km Matt Rodgers emerged from the rain, passed the car and stormed back within the group (see video..it’s true!) much to the surprise of his team mates…a super effort by Matt to get back on allowed the min the 5 riders to gain an official time and position.. Nonna’s La Squadra achieved a 2 minute improvement on last year and 30 places improvement with a time of 43m 58s in 43kph average speed..the team came in 78th Place from 165 teams a great effort the winning team was 37m 06sec in 50.12kph!!!

Gusto Cycling has planned numerous bespoke cycling tours for a diversity of people including a growing posse of cyclists from the USA & Canada. Indeed a group of 4 Californians have planned a tuscany cycling itinerary so spectacular, I just have to share it with you! David and his group obviously have a nose for a good wine (of course they do…they’re from California!) and has requested a bespoke cycling tour to include wine tasting lunch and cycling in some of the most auspicious Vineyards in the Chianti region. Including Castello Brolio and in Southern Tuscany Castello Banfi. Castella Banfi is the home of Brunello Montalcino one of the ‘kings’ of red wine. It produces over 500,000 bottles a year and is the oldest winery in Italy (and the second oldest in the world!). Castello Brolio is the largest winery in the Chianti Classico region and where Baron Bettino Ricasoli invented the Chianti formula in 1872 (a very good year!) Our Californian party of four will enjoy a tour (including wine tasting) and lunch at these 2 famous vineyards. After the tour at Castella Brolio. The 2 couples are collected and along with their bikes transferred to Montepulciano where they have accommodation arranged by Gusto in a ‘Palazzo’ (palace) within the walls of historic Montepulciano. The next day they cycle 35 km across the breathtakingly beautiful, undulating landscape of the Val d’Orcia region lined with Cyprus and fruit trees, all within the Unesco- a world heritage area, before arrival at the Castello Banfi where they are taken on a guided tour around the vineyard and it’s cellars. They enjoy a wine tasting experience and sample more over a lavish luncheon before staying at Banfi Castle a fabulous hotel where the rooms are huge and gorgeous. The next day the couples are in the saddle again for a cycling tour further into the Tuscan country side to sample more of it’s delights and more of it’s wine! So What’s your ideal trip? Combining your cycling trip with exploring Tuscan food, wine, culture and Iconic medieval towns and villages adds a new dimension to your holiday and is a great way to keep fit in the process.. Of course if you want a cycling tour with no distractions you can plan a bespoke cycling focussed trip …we can provide a cycle guide to show you the very best of each area of Tuscany. Or why not this year consider watching the World Champs ….Gusto Cycling have Cycling World Championships travel packages from September 21 – 29….held in Gusto’s own home base of Montecatini Terme As I am beginning to realise the Gusto customers have an enormous appetite for cycling, good food and adventure! Watch this space for other ideas of bespoke Gusto cycling trips too good not to share.

After his Tour de France win now Bradley Wiggins targets the Giro D’Italia… Naples to host the 2013 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza Milan, June 25, 2012 – The city of Naples will host the Grande Partenza of the 2013 Giro d’Italia, exactly 50 years after the Corsa Rosa last started in the southern Italian city in 1963. The 96th edition of the race starts on Saturday May 4 and will end on Sunday May 26. The first stage of the 2013 Giro d’Italia will touch several parts of Naples. It will start in Piazza Vittoria, visit the Chiaia, Mergellina and Posillipo areas before finishing on the spectacular Via Caracciolo, overlooking the bay of Naples. The Grande Partenza of the Giro d’Italia will begin on Tuesday April 30, with the arrival of the race caravan in Naples. Preliminary operations will begin on Wednesday May 1, with the top rider press conference at Castel dell’Ovo on Thursday May 2. The official team presentation will be held on Friday May 3 in the famous Piazza del Plebiscito in the centre of Naples. The official announcement of Naples as the host of the 2013 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza was made today in Milan, at the headquarters of race organisers RCS Sport and the La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, by the mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris, the editor of La Gazzetta dello Sport Andrea Monti, the CEO of RCS Sport Giacomo Catano and the Managing Director of RCS Sport Michele Acquarone. Giacomo Catano said: “The last two Italian starts of the Giro d’Italia were in Venice and Turin, alternating with starts in Amsterdam and Herning in Denmark, to represent the international spirit of the Corsa Rosa. In 2013 it’ll be Naples’ turn and on behalf of RCS Sport I’d like to thank all those people who have helped make it happen. It’ll be a moment of pride and excellence for the Giro d’Italia.” Luigi De Magistris said: “ This summer we’re going to unveil the biggest bike path in the south of Italy (20km long) and that signifies how much the Naples council cares about cycling.” Andrea Monti said: “In Naples and in all the south of Italy, there’s a lot of love for cycling and that’s clear to see every time the Giro d’Italia goes through the area. The Giro d’Italia has united Italy for over a hundred years, in this historic moment it will be even more so.”
